Virginia High tops Abingdon 4-3

Virginia High scrapped and scraped their way to a hard fought 4-3 win over Abingdon. The Bearcats put together seven base hits and pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie game. Defensive plays by the Bearcats kept the Abingdon Falcons  from putting a rally together. Virginia High threw out two runners at third base from center-fielder Jamie Lathrop and caught a runner trying to score with a throw from right fielder Bobby Medley.

The Bearcats jumped out with a 2-0 lead in the second inning when leadoff hitter Justin Lewis reached on an error and scored on a double by Nolan Hoss. Hoss' courtesy runner scored off a base hit by Jared Moulse. Abingdon scored a pair in the third and the scored remained tied 2-2 going into the seventh. Michael Bradley scored in the seventh after knocking a double and rounding his path out off a hard triple by Bobby Medley. Medley then scored what would prove to be the game winner form an RBI single by Jordan Dixon.

Nolan Hoss started the game on the mound for the Bearcats and pitched an effective three innings before turning things over to reliever Zach Griffith. Hoss issued one base on balls and gave up seven hits. Griffith added the win to his record and held the Falcons to two base hits over the final four innings. Griffith had six strikeouts.
