Virginia High claims Region IV title

6/2/07 Virginia High claimed the Region IV Championship and earned the right to host their state quarterfinal game with a 9-3 win over Richlands. VHS jumped into the lead in the bottom of the first with two runs off Zak Messer's leadoff homerun followed by Brandon Arnold's double, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI grounder. Richlands would not go down easily scoring two of their own in the top of the third to tie things up 2-2. Hunter Greer scored in the third after reaching base with a hit, moving to second with a hit batter and scoring off Justin Grimm's RBI single. But the Blue Tornado struck back with a run in the fourth to tie the game a second time. The Bearcats then exploded for six runs off five hits in the bottom of the sixth and Grimm on the mound in relief. Grimm took over for starter Preston Smith in the fifth and earned the win. Grimm struck out the first six batters he faced and gave up one hit, a double in the corner in the seventh. Smith gave up four hits and had four strikeouts in his four innings of work while Grimm finished up with seven strikeouts. Trey Roark had a three for three night at the plate and Messer, Smith and Grimm each had two hits. Smith and Grimm also each had two RBI's. VHS will now host Region III runner-up Northside on Tuesday in the VHSL AA State Quarter-Finals.
