Virginia High loses to Abingdon in 8 inning game

5/26/07 Virginia High held graduation ceremonies Friday night but Abingdon handed them an extra lesson on Saturday night showing the Bearcats that games are not won without defense. VHS committed six errors in the field to lose 8-6 in eight innings allowing the Falcons to walk out with the Highlands District Tournament trophy. Starting pitcher Justin Grimm was charged with two earned runs in four innings and Preston Smith relieved giving up one earned run. The Bearcats trailed by three in the bottom of the fourth and battled back with four to take the lead. VHS also benefited from a pair of Abingdon errors. Abingdon tied things up with a run from a dropped third strike in the fifth and the Falcon pitcher settled in keeping the Bearcats quiet the rest of the night. Abingdon took the lead and the win with a two out walk followed by a triple and the Bearcats sixth error of the night. VHS will host Tazewell on Tuesday in the first round of Region IV play.
